چکیده
Phospholipid bilayers are the basic structural element of biological membranes. They separate the various cell compartments found in eukaryotic cells and form the outer barrier (cell membrane or plasma membrane) of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells separating the cytoplasm from the extra-cellular space. The composition of phospholipid bilayers varies with the cell type and function of the membrane. It commonly contains, for example, charged lipids, neutral or zwitterionic lipids, glycolipids, cholesterol, and sphingomyelin. The hydrocarbon core of the lipid bilayer forms a passive barrier for ions, sugars, and other metabolites. The lipid components of the membrane provide a matrix for incorporation of membrane proteins that are involved in cell processes such as transport of ions and molecules across the membrane, cell signaling, and ligand recognition (receptors). Biological phospholipid bilayers are actively kept in a fluid state [Sin72], allowing lipids and membrane proteins to diffuse in the lipid bilayer and to form functional domains for cell processes.

Collective dynamics in phospholipid bilayers investigated by inelastic neutron scattering: Exploring the dynamics of biological membranes with neutrons
We present the first inelastic neutron scattering study of the short wavelength dynamics in a phospholipid bilayer. We show that inelastic neutron scattering using a triple-axis spectrometer at the high flux reactor of the ILL yields the necessary resolution and signal to determine the dynamics of model membranes. The results can quantitatively be compared to recent Molecular Dynamics simulatio...
متن کاملContinuous distribution model for the investigation of complex molecular architectures near interfaces with scattering techniques.
Biological membranes are composed of a thermally disordered lipid matrix and therefore require non-crystallographic scattering approaches for structural characterization with x-rays or neutrons. Here we develop a continuous distribution (CD) model to refine neutron or x-ray reflectivity data from complex architectures of organic molecules. The new model is a flexible implementation of the compo...

متن کاملCharacterization of a Biomimetic Polymeric Lipid Bilayer by Phase Sensitive Neutron Reflectometry
Neutron reflectivity measurements were performed on a cell membrane mimic system consisting of a polyelectrolyte multilayer plus a synthetic terpolymer plus a phospholipid layer, at all of the intermediate steps in the assembly of the composite, to obtain neutron scattering length density depth profiles. The polyelectrolyte multilayer functions as a soft, water-containing cushion for the membra...

Specular neutron reflectivity was used to study the time course and nature of the interaction of the positively charged, peripheral membrane protein cytochrome c with supported bilayers of zwitterionic 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DOPC) containing the anionic lipid 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-glycero-3-phosphatidylserine (POPS). The supported bilayers were prepared by deposition on s...
